Newsletter Term 2 Week 7 2024
Principal's Message

Dear Parents, Guardians, and Students
Talofa Lava,
I hope this message finds you well. As we approach the end of the term, I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to all parents and guardians for ensuring that our students come to school in full uniform. Your support in maintaining our school's standards is greatly appreciated.
I would also like to remind everyone to please be careful when walking through the carparks. The safety of our students and parents is paramount, and we must all remain vigilant to prevent any accidents. Please keep in mind that reversing vehicles may not always see pedestrians.
Our next P&C Meeting is being held on Wednesday 5th June at 3pm in the Resource Centre. All parents and carers are welcome to attend. We are also holding our first Maori and Pacific Island Family Talanoa/Meeting on Wednesday 12th June at 3pm in the Middle Campus Tuckshop area. An information flyer for this will be sent out to all families and uploaded to our school Facebook page.
We are excited to announce that our annual Sports Day is scheduled for Thursday, 6th June. This event is always a highlight of the school calendar, and we are grateful to Mr. Patrick Phillips for his hard work in organising it. We look forward to a day filled with fun and healthy competition.
Lastly, a friendly reminder that Semester 1 report cards will be emailed home. We are trialling the use of email instead of paper-copies. If your preferred email address has changed since you first enrolled your child, please update it with the school office to ensure you receive all important communications.
Thank you for your ongoing support and cooperation.
Warm regards,
Masina Taule’alo
Principal
Teaching and Learning at Mabel

Early Reading - Helping your child
When we first begin teaching children to read, we teach them letter-sound correspondences in a particular order. In Prep, we start with the sounds that commonly go with the letters s, a, t, p, i and n. Students read decodable texts so they can practice matching the sounds and letters as they are learning them. When the students are unsure of a word, we ask them to ‘sound it out’ (individual sounds) and then to ‘blend’ the sounds together to read a word.

Head of Department Curriculum

There are a number of online sites where you can access free decodable texts and other great texts.
